Last time, we looked at how to get started in affiliate marketing, now we will look at one of the first steps everyone needs to do to begin. Product research.

The best place to choose products from I believe is Clickbank. They are the largest online marketplace, they deal with all the payments and tracking. They pay twice a month without fail, I think they are definitely the place to start your affiliate marketing business.

To begin searching for products to promote, open up the clickbank website and click on “Marketplace”. This will bring up a list of 23 categories on the left, ranging from Arts and Entertainment, though to Travel. One method of searching for a great product to make money online is to manually browse though the products. This can be very time consuming however so I would recommend using the search feature.

To do a search for a product in a niche you are interested in, you can type a subject directly into the search box, and it will search by “Keyword Relevance” by default. I didn’t find this particularly helpful, so will explain how to find the best products by using the advanced search feature.

When you click into the Advanced Search page you will see a list of options you can filter your search results by. To find the best products to promote, there are two filters which are invaluable. These are the “Gravity” filter and the “Affiliate Page” filter. If you haven’t heard the term Gravity before, it is basically how popular the product is with affiliates. The higher the gravity, the more affiliate are promoting it. I believe it is best to go for a product which has a high gravity, as this means it is selling very well and lots of people are buying the product.

Some people try to stay away from these as there is more competition for that product. This may be true, but there are billions of people using the internet, and if you setup your Affiliate marketing business correctly, you will make sales and attract people, no matter how much competition there is.

So when we do a search, for example “Lose weight fast” we want to search for those products with a high gravity, and who has an affiliate support page. This is very important because when you choose a product, you are committing yourself for a long time of promoting that product. You will want to choose a product which has all the tools and hard work done for you, ready for you to use. We will be spending our time generating traffic, not weeks of research and setting up landing pages etc.

When doing a search, it is useful to search only the category you are interested in; otherwise all sorts of products come up on the search, which are not directly related to the type of product you are looking for.

There are affiliate support programs which can be subscribed to, which have their own search tools for clickbank. One of these I have used and it had a fantastic feature which allowed you to view the products gravity score over time. This immediately shows if the product is still becoming popular, or has past its best.

Last post we looked at lots of different ways to make money online. We found that affiliate marketing is a great choice for people starting out. This is because quite large sums of money can be made for a very small investment of money. This is exactly what everyday people need, to pay off credit cards, mortgages and get back on top of their finances.

The first thing to be aware of when starting up an affiliate marketing business, is that making money online is never quite as easy as it is promised. After reading lots of “how to” articles, and paying to join a training system, I discovered that it takes time and effort to make anything happen. If we were told this beforewe signed up and started, we would have a much better frame of mind, and be much more likely to succeed.

For those of you thinking of starting affiliate marketing, rest assured it is definitely a worthwhile thing to spend time doing. You need to begin by expecting to “learn the ropes” first. There are quite a few processes and skills which need to be learned, before any real substantial money can be made. If you begin by thinking you will earn $2000 in the first month, you may be disappointed. Don’t get me wrong, goals and dreams are very important, but expect to do some hard work before you see the money they promise.

Some useful tips when first staring out are:-

·         Have a goal – Where you end up is largely set by what your goals and dreams are.

·         Write them down – There is a lot of research showing that written goals are a lot more likely to come to pass than goals in your head.

·         Do some research – Don’t buy into the first training package or system you find, look around and find one which is best suited to you.

·         Have a plan – Plan what steps you will take to successfully get a campaign off and running. A good training package will outline the steps needed to make money online.

·         Follow your plan till you see results – Don’t get distracted by all the other things you can do to make money, if it’s not in your plan.

·         Fine tune – When you are making money, analyse your results, see what is working and what isn’t and plan your next campaign to suit.


If you invest in a training program, they will outline the practical things which you need to do to get everything linking together and working properly. Some of these include:-

·         Setting up a clickbank account.

·         Setting up a Paypal account.

·         Buying web hosting, or showing you free hosting websites.

·         How to get cheap domain names.

·         How to link your domain name to your hosting site.


These are mechanical steps which every Affiliate marketer must do, before they can start choosing products, researching keywords, creating landing pages, driving traffic and analysing the results.

·         Make your own product – Make an E-Book or training course and sell it online. Then get affiliates to promote it for you.

·         Design Websites – There is a huge demand for new websites. If you have a creative streak then make some sample websites and market yourself to the world.
All of these methods work for different people. Some people have writing ability, and make a very nice income writing articles for others. Some people are entrepreneurs and create products for people to buy. Some people get into Forex trading and make a lot of money that way. What you choose to do depends on your talents and interests. Don’t try to sell music and lyrics if you have no musical ability at all and don’t like music!

A very popular method to get into the world of making money online is affiliate marketing. People begin making money this way, then move into another area which suits them better when they actually have money to use. This is because it is possible to make a lot of money for a very small outlay of money. All it takes is effort and time initially, then it it relatively simple to continue to generate an income, while perusing other avenues.

Like anything worthwhile, this method will take some effort, mainly in learning what to do, and the best ways to do things. If done correctly, the process can be relatively straightforward. If done the wrong way, it can be expensive and frustrating.

There are many training programs on the internet designed to help new marketers get started the right way, and teach them how to avoid the mistakes many people make when first starting out.

Clickbank - An online marketplace on which tens of thousands of people sell products. They do all the money processing, so any payment is secure, and done in one place.

Keywords - When people search in Google or Yahoo etc, they enter "Keywords". These are all tracked and look at by affiliate marketers to see which keywords to use when advertising a product.

Adwords - You may have noticed that Google  have ads on just about every website on the internet and when you search? These are created and managed by Google Adwords. 

Landing Pages - These are websites which review and promote other peoples products.

Sales Pages - These are websites which promote the persons own product.

Sales Copy - The big sales pitch is called a "Copy"

Traffic - When people visit a website they have become "traffic"! If they are interested in what is on the website, they are "Targeted Traffic"

Gravity - When a product in clickbank is selling well, and lots of affiliate's are promoting it, it will have a high "gravity"

SEO - Search Engine Optimization. How highly a website ranks when people search, and how likely it is to come up on the first page is how "Google friendly" it is. There are lots of factors which add up to make your page "Google friendly" and from what I can gather, it changes from time to time. Getting your website setup with good SEO is quite a skill. 
I highly recommend Michael Goudelock's training program, Clickbank Mastermind. He is an honest, genuine guy who has a fantastic video course, which deals with SEO, adwords, creating landing pages etc. I learned a huge amount about internet marketing from him when I first started.
